Teaching & Learning Styles

We, as humans, were designed to be life-long learners. There is nothing that shuts down our learning faster than having new material given to a learner in the wrong format for their own style of learning. In addition, as a teacher, if we like presentations but our learner likes projects we are destined to have a mismatch and the outcomes for everyone are not ideal.

A series of strange life events caused our family to experience a whole bunch of different learning models. We spent a year or more in each of these different learning situations Montessori, 2 private schools, public school, school at home, project based school, self-directed learning, and eventually early college. The lesson that came from all of these different experiences is that there are as many ways to teach as there are to learn and every person has their own unique needs and wants.

One of the first things I learned when I was considering homeschooling was that I needed a clear understanding of the following things…

  1. My Teaching Style: Start by taking a quiz and understanding yourself, your needs and wants. Without this there is a really good chance that conflicts with learners will happen. Homeschool Style Quiz
  2. My child’s Learning Style: The learners, each one, will have their own unique style. Understanding the learner is critical to creating a healthy learning environment. Homeschool Learning style Quiz

It is worth investing time in figuring out both and then finding the common ground. Here are some more materials worth reviewing.
